Self-Care!

Updated: Mar 1

Hello everyone,

How are you all? I hope you are all safe and well.

Before I post my introductory video, I wanted to ask you about self-care. Do you do it? If so, how often?

I have realised lately how important self-care is. We can all carry on like troopers and get so carried away with life that we ignore some warning signs. It is ok; we are only human, after all.

The past couple of years have finally caught up with me. I have taken some time daily and swapped out everyday routines/habits with new ones and kept up some I have done for the past few years. In the space of a week, I have noticed a considerable change. Taking care of your mind along with your health and body is paramount.

Things I do:

  • Drink half a litre of water to rehydrate as soon as I get up!

  • I am being vigilant at taking nutritional supplements daily, in any areas that need extra attention. At the moment I have hospital grade sustagen once a day. Magnesium, B12 and Calcium tablets.

  • I am mindful of the types of food I choose. We used to eat anything and everything when we lived in the city. We are now back to eating out twice a week with one meal being our only deep-fried meal - Fish and Chips or is it "Fush and Chup"?

  • Take care of my personal hygiene daily.

Things I have started to do:

  • Spend at least 20 mins doing breathing exercises and meditation when I wake up instead of jumping to check my phone!

  • - Always prioritize fluids and meals/snacks throughout the day, instead of skipping them! Your brain needs adequate levels of fuel along with the body, regular snacks help to fuel it. (Important for your central nervous system).

  • Spending at least 30 minutes outside in the sun in the morning, ensuring I connect with the grass by taking my shoes off. (Important for your central nervous system).

  • Making sure I get at least an hour in a day doing what I love. It has been a couple of years since I played the guitar, so you guessed it, that is what I am doing at the moment. (Important for your central nervous system).

  • Making sure I do some sort of physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day, with two pups and a big yard that needs constant maintenance, this one has been easy to manage! (Important for your central nervous system).

  • MakeMaking a point to have a high protein, low fat/sugar snack at least an hour before bed, usually two hours for me. I usually have a yoghurt.

  • Making a point to shower at the same time each night to ready my mind and body for rest. - Making a point to go to bed early and get up early, at the same time. Your body loves a consistent routine. By accomplishing this, your body knows when it’s time to unwind and relax. My sleeps have certainly been a lot more restful doing this. I have found that I don’t have any issues falling asleep or staying asleep. (Important for your central nervous system).

  • Make a point to stay off any electronics for a half an hour before bed.

Personal Confidence Boosters:

It is important to reboot confidence levels as much as possible (These are somethings I do/are in progress).

  • Be thankful for all accomplishments, no matter how big or small.

  • Do things that make me happy.

  • Get my hair done.

  • Got a tattoo honouring my parents.

  • Get a symbolic back tattoo done. In progress!

  • Get into martial arts again. In progress!

  • Work on physique. In progress!

  • Tick off bucket list activities. In progress!

  • Accomplish my goal to be a nurse. In progress!
